The Studio Chapter Summer Movie Time

Hello Studio Chapter Family and Friends – looks like warmer weather is finally on the immediate horizon. This may be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences. Regardless, we hope you are enjoying your summer. And since summer is here it’s time for a movie night! Our 'resident' film historian, Annick, will be presenting some films preceded by an always informative and interesting presentation. Although the July date is our only ‘official’ get together for the chapter, everyone is invited to attend both dates. And the price is right – FREE! Just bring your own folding/lawn chair. For July we will first meet at Coco’s for a late lunch early dinner. Information can be found below. We hope to see you soon. Stay cool!

July Film and Dinner at Coco’s:

July 13, 7:30pm- From Annick:  “A Tribute to Hal Roach- I’ll be exploring Hal Roach's contributions to both Hollywood and Arcadia history and the stars he helped create. At his Culver City studio, he produced some of the most popular comedy shorts starring Laurel and Hardy and the Our Gang kids (aka The Little Rascals). We'll be seeing 3 films: "Ask Grandma," an Our Gang short from the silent era, and then Roach's 2 Oscar winners: Laurel and Hardy's "The Music Box" and Our Gang's "Bored of Education." And, of course, since this is a club meeting, there will be some Disney connections!”

First Stop – Arcadia Coco’s for dinner. Meet at 4:30. We usually try to get a table in the back room. Regular menu prices apply. Please try to bring cash. Coco’s is located at 1150 Colorado St, Arcadia, CA 91007

Second Stop - Arcadia Heritage Museum. Meet at 7:00. Museum is located at 380 W Huntington Drive, Arcadia, CA 91007 (Museum is less than 10 min from Coco’s and there is free parking.) Movie takes place in the patio area around the back. Walk the pathway on either side of the building to reach the patio. You can enter the museum from the patio to use restrooms or visit the museum. Don’t forget your lawn chair and water/soda. Popcorn provided by the museum.

August Film – not a club outing but everyone is invited!

August 10, 7:30pm-From Annick: "Hell's Angels"- Directed and produced by billionaire Howard Hughes, this World War I drama was partially filmed at the Army's Ross Field balloon school in Arcadia. The aerial footage is still considered some of the best every filmed. And, this was the movie that made Jean Harlow a sex symbol star!

Studio Chapter April Field Trip!

We have another field trip coming up this coming Saturday April 13^th. This time in South Eastern Los Angeles County – historic home of The Carpenters, LA County Dairy Farms, Orange Groves and classic 1950’s architecture and culture (not-to-mention the world’s oldest operating McDonalds). This small museum sits on what was a massive Aerospace campus that closed in 1999 after 70 years in business. At its height it employed over 25,000 people. The Studio Chapter October Field Trip

Happy Halloween Time! The October 20^th field trip to the Garner Holt exhibits in San Bernardino County is still on! We just have not had a chance to get the details out until now. We’ll be visiting the Garner Holt “Mechanized Magic: 40 Years of Garner Holt Productions in San Bernardino County” first, then lunch at a local restaurant then we’ll visit the Lincoln Memorial Shrine afterwards to see the exhibit and the amazing Animatronic of Lincoln created by Garner Holt Productions. (Note the shrine does not open until 1PM.) Please meet promptly at 10AM. We’ll wait about 10 min before we head into the museum. If you know you can make it and would like to RSVP or have any questions please contact us at info@thestudiochapter.org. Please bring cash if you plan on eating at the restaurant. See you then!

Studio Chapter Meeting Update & More!

Today we have information on our March get-together and some other updates for you. First up is our March get-together on Saturday March 17^th. We’ll be meeting up at Downtown Disney to see ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ with lunch afterwards at either Rainforest Café or ESPN Zone. We don’t have the exact show times yet but we’ll catch the first showing which is usually between 10 and 11 AM which would make lunch around 12:30 to 1:30 PM. We do not plan to go into the parks as a group so for those who don’t have AP’s--no worries. We can also arrange carpools with AP’s to avoid parking fees. Just let us know! As soon as they post show times we’ll send an update.

Next we have a few meeting and other activities for your calendar.

UPDATE 03/14/18:
Show Time for A Wrinkle in Time at AMC Downtown Disney this Saturday is 10:45 AM so we will keep our meet up time at 10 – 10:15 AM at AMC. Please allow time for parking, etc. For those who asked this is not a 3D showing. If you’re coming only for lunch please meet at the AMC around 1 PM. The movie should be done around that time give or take 15 min. We can decide as a group whether to eat at Rainforest or ESPN Zone. (We are opting for either of these as they will be torn down once hotel construction starts in a couple of years.) Don’t forget your umbrella!

Road Trip to Solvang 

and Pea Soup Andersen’s

 (with a Disney twist)

Although we’re now half way between end of summer 2017 and beginning of summer 2018, that season always brings back fond memories of family vacations and day or weekend drives to one of the many great destinations we have here in Southern California. One of those destinations was, of course, our annual summer trip to Disneyland. But another was Solvang. Many times Solvang was just a few hours pit-stop on the way to or from Morro Bay but often it was the final destination on a drive up the 101 Freeway. For me it was ‘almost’ as fun as Disneyland but without the rides. Maybe, perhaps, a ‘forgotten land’ disconnected from the Hub. Who could resist the quaint Danish style architecture, windmills and storks perched high on the rooftops. All the shops filled with neat souvenirs and European toys. And the food! The food was always a highlight. Danish style sandwiches, Ableskievers, Danish sausage (Medisterpølse) and red cabbage, onion cheese bread, chocolates from Ingeborg’s and pastries! Ja, we ‘went Danish’ while up in Solvang.

A trip to Solvang would also not be complete without a stop at Pea Soup Andersen’s restaurant located in the gateway town of Buellton along the beautiful CA 101 highway. Often we would stop at Andersen’s on the way up AND back! Most of you reading this are probably familiar with Andersen’s but for those who aren’t, it was one of those places you just had to stop at due to all the highway billboards along the way announcing how many miles until you reached the place. At one time there were many of them, 20 -30 miles apart. And all the billboards were adorned with two very cute characters; Hap-pea and Pea-wee. They were certain to catch every kid’s attention and ensure the parents were going to make at least a brief stop at Andersen’s. (Sadly, most of those billboards are now long gone.)

So at this point you’re wondering what this has to do with Disney. Well, there is a Disney connection to Andersen’s. Actually, there is probably a Disney connection to almost everything these days, but this Disney connection takes place back in the 1940’s and you may not know about it.

The original characters used for Andersen’s were from a famous 1920’s cartoonist named Forbell. He drew a comic strip called ‘Little Known Occupations’ that appeared in Judge Magazine (published between 1881 and 1947). One of the ‘occupations’ were pea splitters. Andersen’s became aware of this and eventually obtained permission to use these characters for their restaurant. However in 1944 the Andersen’s commissioned Disney artist Milt Neil to redraw them into the more appealing and jolly characters we see today so they could be used in promotional material. Milt Neil was a Disney Studio animator from 1935 to 1944. Known as ‘The Duck Man’ because he drew Donald Duck, he also worked on such films as Dumbo and Fantasia among others. Andersen’s then held a contest to pick the names for the newly drawn characters and that’s how ‘Hap-pea’ (the jolly pea splitter) and ‘Pea-wee’ (his faithful helper) as we now know them were born. And there you have an interesting Disney connection to Andersen’s and the little town of Buellton.

Over the years Andersen’s tried various ways to attract visitors to Buellton and their restaurant besides just their famous billboards. One of the more interesting was when they opened a small animal park on adjacent property. Andersen’s Animal Park featured a small train and many animals that ‘starred’ in the movies, TV shows and commercials. It was run by the husband and wife team who trained those animals—Pat and Ted Derby. The park was opened in 1969 but only lasted for about two years. It closed to make way for the Andersen’s Motel (which is still in operation though not run by Andersen’s).

This past October 2017 The Studio Chapter took our own road trip up to Solvang with, of course, a stop at Andersen’s. The day started out at The Red Viking restaurant where many of us enjoyed their smorgasbord for lunch. (And we had with us our own ‘Viking’ as you can see from the photos.) Then some of us walked around the town and shopped while another group did some wine tasting. For those of us who opted to shop, a stop at the Jule House (Solvang’s perennial Christmas shop) was a must! Solvang also has a ‘Scarecrow Fest’ this time of year where many of the store vendors put out scarecrows which visitors can vote on (though this year they were mostly skeletons all decked out). This added to the Fall/Halloween ambiance and fun.

Later we all met up again, did some more Solvang shopping and even got in a drink at an awesome little Tiki ‘wine bar’ with, yes, a few more Disney references. ‘Sort This out Cellars’ is also the place that produces and sells Charles Phoenix wine with the appropriate name ‘I Knowww Merlot’. Their shop in Solvang has wine tasting in the front and the High Roller Tiki Lounge tucked in the back. Very tiki retro in style they were also playing some vintage footage of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room on the TV while a sign saying ‘Cast Members Only’ hung on the door that led to the back room. All the cocktails here are wine based and from what I was told, quite delicious. I opted for one of their hand-crafted Orange Cream sodas which was also very good.

We then left Solvang and stopped at Pea Soup Andersen’s in Buellton for dinner and some fun conversation. And yes, many of us had to get the split pea soup. After a bit more shopping in their gift shop we headed home. All in all it was a long but very enjoyable day and something a bit different we may do again as a DFC chapter.

• San Antonio Winery also has wine tasting and a nice gift shop. There are no tours during the month of December unfortunately. Plenty of free parking. We will also have a few ‘door’ prizes and will do a gift exchange for those who want to participate. Since we do not have a separate room and only table space, gifts should be on the smallish size with a value of $10 -$20.
• Optionally for those who wish to we’ll head down to Knott’s Merry Farm after the lunch. (Time will depend on how long the lunch goes but we’ll meet up by the old school house in Ghost Town between the wood carver and Bird Cage theater.)

July Meeting - Dinner and a Movie!

Hello Studio Chapter family and friends – following is some detailed information on our next meeting which is this Saturday July 22^nd. We will meet a Coco’s Arcadia for a late lunch/early dinner, chat about club and chapter news and try to fit in some D23 discussion plus have a raffle. Then we’ll make our way to the Arcadia Heritage Museum to watch the movie Seabiscuit preceded with a talk about the film and filming location by our own chapter member and movie historian AJ Downhower. Before the talk and movie starts we should have some time to enjoy the museum as well.  Make sure to bring your own lawn chair!! With the craziness of D23 now over and Comic Con coming up we hope you’ll be able to squeeze in some time to join us. Full information is below. See you real soon!

Date	Saturday July 22nd.
Time	Meeting/Meal at Coco’s 3:30 PM. We’ll start making our way to the museum about 6:15 PM. Museum will open around 6:30 PM to enjoy. Talk is at 7:30 PM and Movie will start around 8:30 PM.

Details	For the meeting Coco’s is providing the room for free. You will be required to order from the regular menu at minimum an appetizer and beverage. Separate checks will be provided. They provide popcorn but please bring your own drink (or just order a to-go drink from Coco’s.) We’ll have from about 6:30-7:30 to look around the museum. Hello All – Enjoying the heat yet?? The AMC Downtown Disney finally posted show times for this Saturday, June 24^th. For those of you planning on meeting up please see the times below. You are welcome to attend all or part of the fun. Just show up! If you are planning on coming and want a contact phone send and email to info@thestudiochapter.org and we’ll give you Ron and/or Steve’s number so you can text us should you need to. No need to contact us otherwise. If we don’t see you Saturday then hopefully we’ll see you at our July meeting on Saturday July 22^nd. In the meantime—stay cool!

Cars III at AMC Downtown Disney:

Meet at 10 AM in front of the theater. Buy your ticket when you get there or in advance. We don’t believe it’s reserved seating so it shouldn’t be an issue. Showtime is at 11AM. (Reserved seating for this theater appears to only be for the IMAX screen.)

Lunch at Rainforest Café Downtown Disney:

Meet at 1:30 PM in front of Rainforest. If you come for lunch but not the movie please be on time so we have a head count. We’ll be putting our name in at 1:30 so will need to know for how many. Please bring cash to make it easier to pay the bill. Some of us plan on browsing Downtown Disney after lunch.

Trader Sams Disneyland Hotel:

Meet at 6:30 PM at Trader Sams for a tropical drink. To make up the cancelled luau, we’re planning on finding a table (wish us luck) on the patio of Trader Sams to relax and enjoy something refreshing. Time is approximate. (Note: if it’s insanely crowded then we’ll find some place to gather at Tangaroa Terrace.)

June/July Meeting Update

June 24^th – Schedule Change

• ·         Due to circumstance beyond our control we will NOT be having the Luau. (Sigh) We will do it in the future but not this year.  Instead we’ll be meeting at Downtown Disney to watch Cars III with lunch at Rainforest after the movie. Consider this a meet-up so no RSVP needed. Just show up. We’ll send out movie time as the date approaches but we’ll be aiming for an 11 AM showing with lunch afterwards. Later in the day we’ll probably meet up at Trader Sam’s to make up for the cancellation of our Luau. J

July 22nd – Meeting and a Movie!

• ·         Were still meeting at Coco’s in Arcadia for our meeting and a late lunch/early dinner at 3:30. Room has been reserved. We’re trying to obtain a guest speaker for the meeting portion. Will update soon. We’ll also have a raffle and chapter updates. About 6:30 we’ll head over to the Arcadia historical museum to watch the 2003 movie Seabiscuit. Our own movie historian Annick Downhower will talk about the movie and filming locations beforehand. We expect this to be especially interesting and enlightening since she is not only a film historian but has in depth knowledge of Santa Anita and horse-racing in general. This is a free event. We’ll send details before the day of the meeting.

July 29th ‘bonus’!

·         Monrovia will be presenting a Disney tribute band as part of the summer concert series. This is not an official chapter event but we wanted to pass on this information in case you are interested.

Knott's Boysenberry Festival 

& 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea!

Our first Meet-up is fast approaching! It’s almost Boysenberry Festival time at Knott’s Berry Farm! We are going to ‘meet-up’ on the first day of the festival Saturday April 1^st to enjoy the park and maybe taste a few boysenberry goodies. Then later in the day meet to have dinner at Mrs. Knott’s for chicken dinner. We do want an RSVP for the dinner only just so we can try and reserve a table. (They don’t normally do this but we may be able to get a table set aside for our group.) So please get back to us as soon as possible but no later than March 29^th. Further down in this blog is an announcement about a special showing of Walt Disney’s 20,000 leagues Under The Sea at the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro. Enjoy the rest of your March everyone and we hope to see you on April 1^st. No April Fools here, just lots of Boysenberries!! J

Knott’s Meet-up Details:

When: Saturday April 1^st

What: Get together to explore Knott’s Boysenberry Festival together and maybe grab a few Boysenberry snacks on the way and ride the Mine Train or catch a show. No agenda—we’ll just play it by ear.

Time: 11 AM by the Chainsaw Wood Carvers booth. We’ll stick around there for about 15 min before we wander off to explore. If you think you might come a bit later let us know and we’ll get you a phone number to text to find out where we are.

Admission: You will need an admission ticket or AP for this. Info on this and parking can be found at the link below. (Knott’s AP prices are a very good deal!)

Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner:

When: Saturday April 1^st

What: Get together to enjoy Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner. Yes, it’s a bit pricy now but most of you will bring home leftovers. The full meal with non-alcoholic drink plus tax and tip minus a discount is $30. Please bring cash for ease of paying the check. No admission needed if you are only attending the dinner.

Time: Meet starting at 3:30 in the restaurant lobby. Dinner is at 4PM.

LA Conservancy Last Remaining Seats at the historic Warner Theater in San Pedro!

This is not a chapter event but we wanted to pass along this information as it may be of interest to many of you. The Last Remaining Seats event for the LA Conservancy will be showing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea at the historic Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro on Saturday June 10^th at 2PM. Tickets go on sale for conservancy members March 29^th and non-members April 5^th. Tickets for these events sell out fast. Seating is not reserved so if you want to buy tickets and try to all sit together that is certainly a possibility.
